Connecting People through Coffee
Coffee? WTH were you thinking?
I know right. I think it’s a way for me to connect with people. Anyone who does know me will tell you I am horrible company at cocktail parties & happy hour. I am the classic introvert and I’ve come to embrace my ‘politely eccentric’ personality. Like a lot of military brats, growing up abroad and essentially having to restart your life every few years, you inherit this identity crisis where you have to latch on to constants like music & art. I really think these things keep you connected not only to the world at large, but to people as individuals as well, and I just believe coffee has become one of these constants for me.
But why coffee and not more popular things like food, wine, beer, etc.?
I think all of these things in a sense are both cultural & social communions that bring people together, but I believe coffee often times gets a bad rap. You 'break bread' over a meal and they call it 'happy hour' for a reason. However, think coffee suffers the ‘let’s grab coffee’ stereotype where people stop being people and become almost transactional in their exchange. Coffee for me is the underdog, a rebellious one at that, with all the potential in the world, and for me personally, I think this speaks to my personality.
If your coffee could speak, what would it say?
I want it to challenge conventions and break down barriers. I also want to incorporate my love of music & art as has been aptly apparent so far, I hope. I think there are a lot of people out there, especially in subgenre music cultures, whom don’t really have access to good coffee, or a voice for. I’m like coffee concepts can still be rebellious and on the fringe, and offer a natural, quality roast. When I got into this, I was floored by how much more you could actually get out of a coffee bean naturally as opposed to all the additives, and I just want to floor people in the same way I was. At the end of the day, just like music and tattoo culture has broken down barriers in rebellion, I want our coffee to deliver the same punch.
